Marlborough's central location makes it an ideal base from which to explore some of the
region's neighbours. To the west, Nelson is less than a two-hour drive away and Westport,
on the South Island's West Coast, is about 3˝ hours.
To the south, Christchurch offers a thriving night-life and is renown equally for its
cafés and wine-bars as its internationally recognised art gallery. Inland from
Christchurch is Hanmer Springs Thermal Resort where a few days can spent enjoying Hanmer's
stunning alpine scenery and soaking in the hot pools.

The Kaikoura coast is host to a number of species of whales and dolphins, including migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. But the undisputed prince among them is the giant Sperm Whale. The Sperm Whale is the largest of all toothed whales and is believed to be the largest toothed animal to ever inhabit Earth, measuring up to 18m long.
