Marlborough's central location makes it an ideal base from which to explore some of the
region's neighbours. To the west, Nelson is less than a two-hour drive away and Westport,
on the South Island's West Coast, is about 3˝ hours.
To the south, Christchurch offers a thriving night-life and is renown equally for its
cafés and wine-bars as its internationally recognised art gallery. Inland from
Christchurch is Hanmer Springs Thermal Resort where a few days can spent enjoying Hanmer's
stunning alpine scenery and soaking in the hot pools.

Blenheim is named for the 1704 Battle of Blenheim, at which troops led by John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, achieved victory over a combined French and Bavarian force. Marlborough is often considered the greatest military genius that Britain has produced. Marlborough's notable descendants include Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales and her 18th century namesake, Lady Diana Spencer.
