If
you're a single traveller visiting Marlborough for business or for pleasure, or if you've
brought your family and want to enjoy the numerous tourist activities in the region,
Marlborough has a wide selection of places to stay that will suit any individual budget
and comfort requirements. To help you choose the best option for you, we've detailed below
what you can expect from the different accommodation types.
Serviced apartments are completely self-contained providing fully-equipped kitchens and
laundry facilities. They are typically serviced every two to three days or as otherwise
arranged - more frequent servicing may incur additional costs.
Budget, shared backpacker accommodation, where the emphasis is on the active travelling
experience, will usually offer a mixture of dormitories, double, twin and single rooms.
Facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms, lounges and laundries are often shared.
Accommodation with an emphasis on personal interaction between the guest and the host.
Cooking facilities are not usually provided. Breakfasts are a feature and are usually part
of an all-inclusive tariff. Other meals may be provided on request. At a farmstay, the
emphasis is on the farm "experience" and must be situated on a working farm.
Holiday homes and cottages are for single party bookings only. They are self-contained,
providing fully-equipped kitchens, laundry facilities and may offer a range of added
facilities such as TV, stereo, DVD, BBQ, etc., with a variety of servicing options.
Holiday parks, also known as camping grounds and motor camps, often offer cabins and
self-contained units as well as tent sites and campervan (motor-home or RV) with access to
power. All properties provide communal kitchens, toilets, showers and laundries in
addition to a variety of additional features. Some parks also offer on-site caravans which
may have cooking facilities, but usually no bedding.
A hotel will feature a licensed restaurant and bar, charge back facilities and on-site
management at all times. All rooms will have tea and coffee-making facilities and
breakfast is provided whether in a restaurant or breakfast room, or via room service.
Catering to the more discerning tourist, boutique or "character" lodges and
resorts offer fine accommodation and excellent cuisine in comfortable surroundings. Many
offer additional specialist activities like personalised fishing tours, wine tours, etc.
Some lodges in more remote locations have full liquor licences and the tariff may include
pre-dinner drinks and canapés, breakfast and dinner.
Motel units are serviced daily or as otherwise agreed with the guest. They are
self-contained providing at least tea and coffee-making facilities and a private or
ensuite bathroom.
