Havelock is a coastal village at the head of Pelorus Sound. Among the town's former residents were rocket scientist William Pickering and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ernest Rutherford. Known as "the father of nuclear physics", Rutherford pioneered the orbital theory of the atom, notably his discovery of "Rutherford scattering". He was knighted in 1914 and was created Baron Rutherford of Nelson in 1931.
